Why I Chose to Do this?

Life was routine as an Info Security professional– scanning logs, implementing policies, vulnerability assessments….etc until I really sat up one day and did some soul searching……..

2 Incidents happened with me…

1. Fear Factor

One of my acquaintance requested me to help him get a PC for his daughter, so that she could complete her school projects. I helped him get a PC & a printer. I told him about the various Internet plans available. He said that he would apply for it.
I happened to meet this gentleman after almost a year and he once again thanked me profusely and told me how the PC was working smoothly. I asked him about the projects his daughter had completed. Thats when I came to know that she was not using her PC for the projects, since they didn’t have an Internet connection at home. In fact she was getting it done through some paid service. On some further inquiry I got to know that this gentleman was cautioned by one of his relatives about the dangers of having net connectivity. He was told that is Bad, evil & Time guzzler. Unfortunately this gentleman never got back to me to cross verify the facts. I would have guided him, educated him. The loss was not his, neither it was mine anyways. But it was his daughter who lost out. She had done half a dozen projects during that time without any personal involvement. I believe she lost on an opportunity to learn new things, explore new topics and to increase her knowledge. I also got to know that the ink had dried on the printer cartridge.

2. Ignorance is Obviously NOT Bliss

A friend narrated an incident which I believe may be playing at many households. His teen son was browsing the net at home. He was sitting next to his son. While casually browsing his son clicked on an innocuous looking link & all of a sudden vulgar images popped up on the screen. Embarrassed he immediately switched off the monitor and ordered his son to leave the room. Though he was a layman he had heard about these things, but did not expect this to happen on his home PC. We ran an anti-virus scan soon after, only to find a long list of virus & other malware.

These 2 incidents really set me thinking. The Internet is a double edged sword. It has all the resources to give you knowledge anytime anywhere and it could also be a nemesis.

……..After giving a lot of thought to this, I decided that something should be done about this….hence this website.

P.S: I resolve to pass on all my knowledge and experience for the benefit of parents, teachers and students, so that they can truly use and harness the power of the Internet. I want them to understand that by taking due precaution they can safely explore cyberspace.

What will follow from now on is real value articles, simplified information, stories….etc. This website will strive to become a one-stop place that can be trusted and relied upon. I will be writing about technology, services and applications in a very lucid and easy to understand language.

Parents used to chat on the phone. Their kids chat online. Parents were told about stranger danger. Well, there’s stranger danger online, too.

Finally, children pose their own set of challenges to parents…apart from Cyber Security, it could also be Physical Security…Emotional Security & Financial Security. The bottom line is these are real challenges and have their roots in ones own Personal Development & Growth. This work is an earnest attempt to bring more awareness & understanding in the most crucial phase of an individual’s life – “Childhood” – Let’s join Hands to make it Secure!!
